greetings! Many moons have waxed and waned since my last postcard. So many changes have transpired that it’s hard to decide which ones to tell you about. The relationship wheel has completed a full revolution … gentle endings behind me, joyous beginnings before me. Many interesting stories there. Maybe I’ll write about them some other time. For now let me just say that internet dating has been quite an experience! and that I believe more than ever that ANYTHING is possible. I renovated his office after he moved out, and created a beautiful space in which to see my clients. I love having a home office! Makes it easier to brew up a nice pot of tea to share ... I am now officially the proud parent of two teenagers, whom I am enjoying more and more with each passing day. What a privilege it is to witness the development of advanced thinking and intuition right before my very eyes. Professionally, the most exciting change has been the advanced training I’ve been receiving in a cutting edge method for helping people get unstuck easily and effortlessly regarding all different kinds of issues. Pop on over to my revised website to see how the scope of my work has expanded tremendously. (www.karenalonge.com ) Okay, now you are all up to speed for the moment. On to the reason I came to the keyboard again today. For a long time, one of my favorite quotes has been this one by Marcel Proust: The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes. Last week my wise, generous, and globe-trotting mother took me and the kids on a trip to Vancouver, Canada. It was our first time leaving the USA. We saw new and poignantly beautiful landscapes, but that was not what changed our vision forever. It was the people. The glorious people. The tour guides, the cab drivers, the multitudes on the streets. Similar to us in far more ways than if we had traveled farther from home, and yet different. Everywhere powerful examples of diversity and tolerance, making it impossible to avoid the understanding that there are many paths, each with its own charm, leading to any one destination. Some highlights: We went whale watching in a zippy little zodiac. It was amazing, as you can imagine, but I kept wondering what the whales thought about these little annoying crafts chasing them around. Were we like gnats to them? Did they want to wave us away? Or were these massive giants benevolently amused by our fascination that bordered on harassment? At the aquarium, two furry little sea otters were floating around on their backs for hours next to each other, holding paws. When they would drift too close to the wall, the male would stick out his flipper and push them back into the middle. Perfect example of effortless ease. My favorite cabbie not only got us to our destination quickly (which actually left us all a little shook up) but he imparted an important life lesson to the kids. Although his homeland is Pakistan, he travels the world driving his cab. He worked in Japan for over four years with no driver’s license or insurance. If he was pulled over in a roadblock or checkpoint, he just kept speaking his own language until a long line of cars were backed up impatiently behind him, and eventually the officer would just wave him on in frustration. His magic advice to the kids: If you are ever going to do anything wrong or against the law, the key to getting away with it is to do it with great CONFIDENCE. Being the controlling parent that I am, I just couldn’t let that stand as is. Had to put a little spin on it for good measure. So I told them that it was true for everything, not just illegal things. The universe truly does seem to rearrange itself to grant requests made with complete and total assurance that the desire will be fulfilled. So decide carefully what it is that you are wanting, be that an opportunity, a relationship, a job, whatever, and then boldly assume it will be yours. Act as if it already is. Do not allow doubt to waver your determination. Don't worry about how it will happen, or when, or where, or any of that. Assume the universe has taken your order, just like a friendly waitress, and that the cooks back in the kitchen will take it from there. It will be delivered with a nice garnish at the perfect time. That cabbie was surely an angel in disguise. In my next postcard I’ll tell you about the eye-opening conversation I shared with my seatmate on the plane – a Canadian woman originally from Iraq. There is SO much more going on over there than any of us could possibly understand … In the meantime, I’d love to hear what’s been going on for you.
