postcards from nowhere

Greetings!

Want to try a radical experiment today? When someone offers you their help, simply accept it. Gracefully, with sincere thanks.

Don't assume that they are condescending to you in their offer, or making a statement about your incompetence, or think you are incapable of doing whatever it is by yourself. Instead, assume that their offer came from the heart, and that it would feel good to them to be of service to their fellow man, and that the gift of gratitude that you give in return completes the kindness transaction - you don't owe them anything else. You don't have to help them carry file boxes to the car tomorrow, or buy them lunch. In receiving their offering with gratitude, you've given them the gift of feeling valuable.

Remember when Dionne Warwick sang, "What the world needs now, is love, sweet love?" I want to tweak that a little. I think there's lots of love out there, but not enough of us are allowing it in. Not enough of us are receiving the many gifts that are offered to us every day. That man isn't holding the door for you because he thinks you can't handle opening it - he's doing it because it feels good to be useful and helpful.

Just for today, see how it feels to be a joyful receiver.

have a great weekend,
karen
